The Jeep Cherokee is back. After being discontinued in 2023 following years of production, Jeep officially showcased the all-new 2026 Jeep Cherokee at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2026. Stellantis made the decision to bring the Cherokee name back as part of its FaSTLAne 2030 plan, which identified Jeep as one of four priority brands for investment and growth.
Why Was the Cherokee Discontinued?
Jeep discontinued the previous Cherokee — a five-door crossover based on the KL platform — in 2023. The stated reasons centered on shifting consumer preferences toward larger SUVs and the brand’s push toward electrified powertrains. The Cherokee occupied a competitive mid-size crossover segment where Jeep felt the Grand Cherokee was already better positioned. Eliminating the Cherokee simplified the lineup and allowed Jeep to focus resources on higher-margin vehicles.
But demand for the Cherokee name did not disappear. Jeep retained the name intentionally, signaling that a future Cherokee was planned rather than dead. That future arrived at the 2026 Detroit Auto Show.
What Changed in the New Cherokee
The 2026 Cherokee arrives on an updated platform with a significantly refreshed design. Jeep described it as a sharper front fascia, sleeker LED headlights, and a more modern interior with a redesigned infotainment stack and simplified climate controls. The vehicle positions itself between the Compass and the Grand Cherokee in the Jeep lineup — a deliberate gap-fill that gives consumers an option that was missing for three years.
Powertrain details for the new Cherokee include expanded hybrid options alongside traditional internal combustion engines, reflecting Jeep’s broader strategy of offering both powertrains simultaneously rather than forcing customers toward electrification.
Will There Be a Cherokee SRT?
No SRT Cherokee has been confirmed. The Stellantis Investor Day 2026 roadmap confirmed SRT variants for the Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer, and Wrangler Scrambler — but not the Cherokee. Given the Cherokee’s positioning as a mainstream mid-size crossover, an SRT variant seems unlikely in the near term. The Grand Cherokee SRT will handle the performance SUV role for Jeep.
That said, a high-performance Cherokee variant — perhaps using the Hurricane turbocharged engine in an aggressive tune — is not impossible. The 2.0-liter Hurricane makes 324 horsepower in the current Grand Cherokee. In a lighter Cherokee body, that number would feel very different. But this is speculation — nothing has been announced.

How the New Cherokee Fits the Jeep Lineup
The new 2026 Jeep Cherokee slots between the Compass and the Grand Cherokee — filling a gap that has existed in the lineup since the KL Cherokee was discontinued in 2023. The Compass sits at the entry level, the Grand Cherokee covers the mid-size premium segment, and now the Cherokee bridges them. The new 2026 Cherokee is expected to balance both attributes more effectively, with Jeep touting capability improvements alongside the more modern interior and technology updates. Whether the Trailhawk trim returns — the off-road focused Cherokee variant — will be a key indicator of how serious Jeep is about trail performance in this generation.
